The 2015 Gartner BI & Analytics Summit just wrapped up and everyone is buzzing about it. One of the key takeaways from the summit according to many attendees is how very critical self-serve business intelligence has become in terms of getting your organization to adopt BI. It’s been interesting reading what everyone has to say on this as well as other topics discussed at the summit.
There’s no question that self-serve BI is an incredibly powerful tool. By making analytics accessible to business users, you give more capability to more people, and that can be a very good thing. Caution is needed, though—self-serve BI within a framework that ensures good data governance is one thing; randomly giving access to anyone who creates a query is risky for more than one reason. There is still value in ensuring you have practices in place to guarantee good data governance. Empowering users not only with the right data but also a good understanding of good data practices and the ability to be flexible and experiment will make self-serve BI a powerful tool indeed.
